Bangladesh Prime Minister, Bhutan King Discuss Establishment of Bhutan Economic Zone, Direct Transit via India

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met with His Excellency Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Her Excellency Queen Jetsun Pema on 6 May 2023 in London, the United Kingdom. In the meeting, Prime Minister Hasina highlighted that Bangladesh has provided economic zones to India, Japan, and South Korea. She offered Bhutan the possibility of developing an economic zone in Kurigram, Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Hasina also underscored Bangladesh’s capacity as a connectivity hub. She noted that Bangladesh’s Mongla and Chattogram ports and the Syedpur International Airport are open for Bhutan’s use.

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck communicated Bhutan’s desire to establish direct transit with Bangladesh through India. Prime Minister Hasina welcomed Bhutan’s eagerness and noted that they will discuss the matter with India if necessary.
